"Risco genético para cancro da mama e o papel das variantes reguladoras de expressão génica"

Joana Xavier is an Assistant Investigator at the Center for Health Technology and Services Research (CINTESIS) hub from Universidade do Algarve. In the last 15 years she has been conducting research in genomics of human diseases, aiming at contributing to their early detection and effective treatment. To this end, Joana integrates genomics, transcriptomics and functional data using bioinformatics and computational biology tools. Having worked in different Research Centres and projects, gave Joana a deep understanding of the science and technology underlying research in both common and rare diseases. Currently, Joana is the leader of an FCT project that aims at identifying novel genetic risk factors for breast cancer by applying an innovative approach to genetic association studies based on allelic expression analysis.

Daniela CORDEIRO

"ncRNAs networks involved in the maintenance of the embryogenic competence in Solanum betaceum Cav. calli"

Daniela é licenciada em Biologia e mestre em Biodiversidade e Biotecnologia Vegetal pela Universidade de Coimbra. Desenvolveu a minha tese de mestrado na Universidade de Gent (Bélgica), onde investiguou variações nucleotídicas associadas a genes envolvidos na variação natural da regeneração de rebentos na planta modelo Arabidopsis thaliana. Depois disso, trabalhou um ano como bolseira de Gestão de Ciência e Tecnologia num projeto nacional no Herbário da Universidade de Coimbra. Atualmente, é bolseira da FCT e está a fazer o seudoutoramento no Laboratório de Biotecnologia Vegetal, do Centro de Ecologia Funcional da Universidade de Coimbra, sob orientação da Doutora Sandra Correia e do Professor Doutor Jorge Canhoto. O foco do seu trabalho são os factores epigenéticos associados à micropropagação de plantas, de forma a compreender os mecanismos moleculares envolvidos na aquisição, expressão e manutenção da competência embriogénica (totipotência) das células vegetais. Nesse sentido aplica técnicas de cultura in vitro e de biologia molecular numa espécie lenhosa com genoma não sequenciado.

Ana Margarida SARAMAGO

"Ribonucleases como alvos para combater Coronavirus"

Margarida Saramago did her degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology (FCT NOVA, Lisbon,

Portugal). During that time, she did an internship in clinical cytogenetics, where she analysed chromosomal abnormalities to diagnose human diseases. Then, Margarida enrolled in the Master´s in Medical Microbiology at NOVA University, Portugal. And it was there that she became fascinated by RNA biology. So, she started working as an intern at the Control of Gene Expression Lab at ITQB, under the supervision of Prof. Cecília Arraiano. There, she did her master´s and Ph.D. thesis, where she studied the relevance of ribonuclease III in several pathogenic bacteria. Since then, Margarida has been researching ribonucleases from bacteria to humans. Prior the pandemics, she had been studying an RNase responsible for gene silencing in a plant symbiont called Sinorhizobium meliloti. Also, she has been involved in international projects regarding synthetic biology. Two years ago, when everyone had to stop their bench work due to the COVID-19 pandemics, Margarida started looking for how she could use her broad knowledge of ribonucleases and apply it in the study of SARS-CoV-2.

"A Importância da estabilidade genética das células estaminais adultas"

Pedro is a biomedical researcher at i3S. He has more than 15 years of experience in the Life sciences / Biomedical sector. An alumnus of the University of Porto, Pfizer, Salk Institute, UCLA. Worked in three countries (Portugal, the UK, and the USA) and experienced different roles in academia and industry. Co-founded two academic associations, and also worked as External Consultant at the Ministry of Health, Portugal.
